Lulu Dates: The Emirati Variety Worth Knowing

When people think of Emirati dates, the Khalas (also spelled Kholas) tends to dominate the conversation. The Lulu variety rarely gets the same attention — but among date specialists and farmers in the UAE, it is regarded with real affection. Its mild, delicate sweetness and distinctive soft texture make it a different kind of experience from the richer heritage varieties, and one worth seeking out.
What Does a Lulu Date Look Like and Taste Like?
The Lulu date is recognisable by its pale yellow-to-light amber skin — lighter than the deep amber of Khalas and significantly lighter than the dark skin of Fard. At the tamr stage, the skin is thin, the flesh is extremely soft and yielding, and the flavour is mild and clean: gently sweet with a light honey note and very little of the toffee-caramel depth that characterises Khalas.
That mildness is both the Lulu's defining characteristic and the reason it is sometimes underestimated. For people who find richer date varieties overwhelming, the Lulu is an ideal entry point — sweet enough to satisfy without being intense, soft enough to eat comfortably, and subtle enough to pair with a wider range of flavours.
One Note on the Name
The word "Lulu" in Arabic means "pearl," which is an apt description of the date's pale appearance. It is unrelated to the Lulu Hypermarket retail chain — if you search for Lulu dates, filter your results to "Lulu date variety" or "Emirati Lulu dates" to find the relevant information. The variety is grown across the UAE, particularly in the Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah regions, and is harvested mainly in August and September.
How Lulu Compares to Khalas
The most useful comparison: Khalas is amber, caramel-rich, and more complex in flavour; Lulu is pale, honey-mild, and more delicate. Khalas has more structural integrity at the tamr stage; Lulu is softer and more perishable. Served together in a date selection, they offer a genuine contrast — the Lulu rounds out a collection that might otherwise be dominated by richer, darker varieties.
Lulu dates are particularly well suited to guests who are newer to premium date culture: the mild flavour is approachable, and the light colour creates an attractive visual contrast in a mixed date presentation.
Using Lulu Dates
Given their delicate texture and mild flavour, Lulu dates are best enjoyed simply — as they come, at room temperature, without fillings or toppings that would overpower them. They pair well with fresh cream cheese or labneh, where the dairy's tanginess complements the mild sweetness without competing with it.
In the kitchen, Lulu dates work well blended into smoothies and date-based drinks where a lighter sweetness profile is desirable — they dissolve smoothly and add sweetness without the colour and deep flavour of Khalas paste.
